Books to Read to Celebrate Juneteenth

Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in GalvestonTexas in 1865 to ensure that all enslaved people be freed. In other words, for two months, slaves in Texas were unaware they were free and slaveowners weren’t in a hurry to comply with abolition laws. One year later, the first Juneteenth celebration was held, then called Jubilee Day. Here are some books to learn more about Juneteenth and African-American history.
