Books to Read while Awaiting Outlander Season Seven
by Mary Kay McBrayer
You want an impossible science fictional story about time travel? We got that. You want a steamy historical romance? We got that. You want a mythology that crosses Gaelic folklore with the holiday you love most (Halloween) and the tail end of the bloodiest witch trial in history? We got that. You want a period piece about a mutiny against imperialism? Girl, take a seat.
Outlander season 7 will premiere mid-June, fans in the U.S. and other countries are still waiting on season 6. This is a list of books to read while we anticipate the next season coming to streaming services.
During a lag between shooting times, the beloved actor who plays Jamie Fraser, Sam Heughan, decides on a bit of a lark to hike the West Highland Way. It’s a 96-mile route. And it’s the dead of a rainy Scottish winter. And he’s going alone. Although this is a memoir, he roots the story of his life into the landscape over which he travels—and it’s the rugged terrain that Outlander watchers love.

Just one more travel book—this time without a celebrity twist. This new, refitted second edition of the Snapshot Scottish Highlands travel guide gives up-to-date advice on how to skip the lines and avoid tourist traps, and shows how to get all the best local experiences, too. He covers the Inner Hebrides, Fort William, Inverness, the Isle of Sky, and more.

If you’re interested in the sexy parts of Outlander, then you might try this steamy novel. Akira Ayes is a healer from a Gypsy family, and when she finds an Highlander with a musket ball lodged in his thigh after a battle of the Jacobite rebellion, she’s determined to help him. And said highlander, the Duke of Gordon, likes how Akira treats him as a man rather than a duke.

When my husband asked me, “What would you do in this situation?” during Outlander’s pilot, I had to answer, “I have literally never considered what I would do in the event that I got sent back to Scotland 250 years ago. But… thinking on my feet? I’d confess everything to that hot, red-headed witch.”
If you’re like me, and you’d consider Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek) among your allies, you might like this book. And not just for its gorgeous cover (although that is a selling point). In these pages, Amy Stewart discusses over two hundred plants that kill, maim, and intoxicate—like the shrub that causes paralysis or the red seed that stops hearts. It’s no wonder the ancient Scots had a hard time recognizing the line between healing and witchcraft.

Speaking of time-traveling witches, Juliet’s a normal career woman. She thinks so even after a man tells her that he’s been in love with her for all her lives. That’s right, lives, plural. The result of a protection charm gone awry, she’s doomed to relive a tragic relationship over and over. Will she be able to break the cycle?

It’s no surprise that Samhain celebrations and witchcraft yield themselves easily to folk horror. This slow-burning thriller is full of folklore, including the hidden curse of one Scottish island. At least, it was hidden, until someone finds the lead box in which it was confined… and unleashes it.

This one isn’t set in Scotland proper, but in a slightly southern locale, Yorkshire. While the novel is set in present day, it reads like a literary fairy tale. Daniel and his sister Cathy live with their father, John, off the grid in a house he built on land where they’re squatting. They learn to live off their land in many traditional ways, but John also often boxes bareknuckle for money for when the landowners come to collect. It’s a grim story, but I’m definitely in.

One of my favorite things to do while watching Outlander is research the historical facts alongside the narrative between episodes. If it’s Scottish history you’re after, too, then check out this compendium of biographies including those of Martha graham, Jackson Pollock, and Thomas Edison. All from Scotland.
