Teach Kids The Value Of Community
Between family, school, and extracurricular activities, children are often surrounded by a community of people who are helping to raise them and inform their understanding of the world. However, many of us don’t realize until we’re adults what a profound effect a grandparent, teacher, or friend had on our lives. With age comes the realization that any and every success is the work of all the people who loved us, and therefore taught us, along the way.
But we can teach kids while they’re still young to not only see and recognize their community for the power it has and the power it gives, but to help invest in that community and grow it.
The book Love Bubble by Harold Green III is a beautiful tribute to this idea. He starts the book with an author’s note that explains how he grew up on the South Side of Chicago with his multi-generational family surrounding him, and how that community changed his life and made him the award-winning poet and author that he is today. The boy in the story accompanies his grandma, Big Girl, on a walk around their neighborhood while she points out all the people in his life and the gifts they have to offer. In growing his awareness of the love and support that his community offers, he learns to tap into his own power.
