HBG Big News This Week: November 5-9, 2018

Following is a recap of major news at Hachette Book Group for the week of November 5-9, 2018:

BestsellersDark Sacred Night by Michael Connelly (LB) debuts at #1 on the New York Times Combined P&E Fiction Bestsellers list. Connelly is also #1 in the Apple Books store. HBG’s distribution clients have two #1s—Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, The Meltdown (Amulet), debuts at #1 on the Children’s Series list and Construction Site on Christmas Night by Sherri Duskey Rinker (Chronicle) tops the Children’s Picture Books list. HBG has 11 titles on the USA Today bestseller list overall, see the full list here.

World Fantasy Award: Fonda Lee’s Jade City was awarded the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel last weekend. Fonda gave a wonderful acceptance speech, an excerpt of which can be read here. This is the second year in a row that Orbit has won the World Fantasy Award (following The Sudden Appearance of Hope by Claire North). It is also the first time ever that a single publisher has won all three of the major international SF/F awards in the same year (following N. K. Jemisin’s wins for the Hugo and Nebula awards)—congratulations to the Orbit team on this amazing achievement!

Major release: David Baldacci’s Long Road to Mercy (GCP) goes on sale next week, launching with major, multi-market television and radio satellite interview tours, and coverage in USA Today and targeted local press. David will hit the road to promote the new novel, with events in New York and Virginia metro areas and Detroit. He’ll also visit Toronto for interviews on major Canadian national programs including The Morning Show on Global TV, Conversations with John Moore on Newstalk 1010, Pop Life on CTV News Network, and will do an event at Indigo.

Baillie Gifford Prize: Basic Books has a nominee for the Baillie Gifford Prize, the UK’s top nonfiction award (formerly the Samuel Johnson Prize), Serhil Plokhy’s Chernobyl. Winners will be announced on November 14.

800-CEO-READ awards: HBG has two books on the longlist for the 2018 800-CEO-READ Business Book Awards—Dopesick by Beth Macy (LB) in the Narrative & Biography category and Mo Bunnell’s The Snowball System: How to Win More Business and Turn Clients into Raving Fans (PublicAffairs) in the Marketing & Sales category.
