This 1916 work discusses psychoanalysis by way of Kant and Freud. Bjerre considers the importance of hypnosis, and clarifies the grounds of his divergence from the teachings of Freud. His clear, well-written arguments are unbiased and backed up with facts. Upon publication, the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis called it “refreshing” and “well worth reading.”

About the Author

Poul Bjerre (1876-1964) was a psychiatrist who introduced Freudian psychoanalysis into Swedish psychology.  He was a correspondent of both Freud and Jung, though his opinions later diverged from both men—deciding that the conscious mind predominated over the unconscious, as well as believing Freud ascribed too much significance to sexual matters.
