Sixteen-year-old Kailey grew up wanting to be like her stepmom, World Cup soccer champion Erica Girard. Kailey was well on her way to soccer stardom—but she hasn’t laced up her cleats in ages. Ever since an injury triggered a permanent escalation of symptoms from her double whammy chronic illness, EDS and POTS, she spends her time on the couch drawing a webcomic about soccer-playing animals. It’s no wonder her former-teammate-turned-toxic-girlfriend broke up with her.
When Kailey runs into her ex in the stands at a game, she’s desperate to prove she’s not completely broken. She panics and announces she has a new girlfriend, which means she must find someone willing to date her. Otherwise her ex will have one more reason to think she’s pathetic.
Thankfully, there’s Abby, a soccer superfan and an avid follower of Kailey’s comics. She’d love to adapt the comics for a project of hers that involves a ridiculously oversized (40-foot!) banner to display in the stands at the season’s final home game. Even though Kailey is very ready to be done with those dumb little comics, she sees an opportunity: she’ll help Abby with the fan-driven art project if Abby pretends to be her girlfriend for the rest of the season.
What starts out as a fake relationship becomes a lot more complicated when Kailey’s mom recruits Abby to accompany her on college tours. Kailey soon finds herself on the road with her new “girlfriend”: limping after tour guides, stargazing in cornfields, imagining a new future for herself as an art student, and starting to wonder if this surprisingly sweet, kindhearted girl could possibly be her girlfriend for real.
