Ren wants nothing more than to never return to her home city of Lüddowen.

After running away as a teenager, she has come to love her quiet life as a librarian at Yardly College. So when her boss—a cat-obsessed dragon with a penchant for knitting—sends her to a Lüddowen auction to acquire an ancient spell book for the library, Ren is less than thrilled. But she’d prefer not to lose her job, so she begrudgingly accepts the assignment.

When a woman named Tilda barges into Ren’s train cabin en route, Ren spies an opportunity for a smokescreen: this loud, chaotic, endlessly hungry stranger is the perfect distraction from anyone Ren might run into from her past. And so begins an unlikely (and flirtatious) friendship between a cautious librarian and a curious woman who has her fingers in far more pies than she’s letting on.

But even Ren isn’t prepared for the spell book being stolen mere minutes after placing the winning bid. What should have been a simple business trip swells to a hassle of epic proportions as Ren and Tilda navigate the pettiness of rival dragons, family feuds, and an inconveniently specific curse that puts Ren’s life in danger—all in the interest of locating a single book that her dragon-boss thought might be nice for their hoard.

Ren, unfortunately and predictably, can’t catch a break, as woven into this whirlwind of events are her growing feelings for Tilda . . . even though she might very well be at the heart of Ren’s problems.
