From National Book and Pen Faulkner nominee, Mary McGary Morris, comes a twisty workplace novel of obsession.

Grace Cathcart Crowley is a proud woman, a fastidious bookkeeper and an obsessively loyal employee. Her entire adult life has been spent in service to the Penniman Mill, the oldest company in town. She will do anything to ensure the success of the mill’s careless and underserving owner, Walter Penniman, even if it means hiding his own money from him—even if it’s hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Years have passed since her brief marriage fell apart, but she still feels the betrayal caused by her former husband’s scandalous relationship with his underage student. The searing public humiliation only intensified her dedication to her work. The mill became her whole life—the source of all importance and purpose.

But now Grace’s rigidly ordered existence is coming undone. Charming and charismatic Walter, who she secretly considers hers, is involved with his sexy HR hire. With new management, the mill’s accounts are being questioned. And the years of rigged finances are beginning to look like embezzlement. As Grace’s world fractures, she is drawn into a strange orbit. She’s losing the one thing she so desperately needs: control.
