This 1918 history of World War I at sea includes an analysis of the performance of the British Navy at the Battle of Jutland—extremely critical of both the British Grand Fleet and Admiral Jellicoe, and hence highly controversial.  Jellicoe himself ascribed Pollen’s criticism to the fact that he had personally turned down a number of Pollen’s inventions, including his fire-control system.

About the Author

Arthur Joseph Hungerford Pollen (1866-1937) was a British naval historian who was instrumental in the development of the world’s first computer-based fire-control system for shipboard artillery, though the British navy ultimately selected a system developed by one of its own, Frederic Charles Dreyer.
