Eric Schmidt acquires primarily in the history and cultures of the premodern world, from prehistory to the Reformation, and from Greece and Rome to Asia and the Americas. Before joining Basic, he was the ancient history editor at University of California Press, where he published books including Hoof Beats: How Horses Shaped Human History and new translations of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. His forthcoming titles at Basic include a new atlas of the Roman Empire by David Potter, grand histories of the Kushite and Asante Empires in Africa and the Mughal Empire in South Asia, a historical biography of Jesus of Nazareth and his world, and an authoritative history of the Samurai.
