Eric Schmidt acquires primarily in the history and cultures of the premodern world, from prehistory to the Reformation, and from Greece and Rome to Asia and the Americas. Before joining Basic, he was the ancient history editor at University of California Press, where he published books including Hoof Beats: How Horses Shaped Human History and new translations of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and The Complete Haiku of Matsuo Bashō. His forthcoming titles at Basic include new histories of the Kushite and Asante Empires, a revisionist account of the Crusades, a global history of the mountains, and a new atlas of the Roman Empire.
