Brian J. Distelberg joined Basic Books in 2015 and became Publisher of the Basic Books Group in 2026. As an editor, he has published multiple New York Times bestsellers and Pulitzer Prize winners, as well as winners of and finalists for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the RFK Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Wolfson History Prize, the Cundill History Prize, and the National Jewish Book Award. Notable titles include Brad DeLong’s Slouching Towards Utopia, Jonathan Metzl’s Dying of Whiteness, Martha Jones’s Vanguard, Jefferson Cowie’s Freedom’s Dominion, Jacqueline Jones’s No Right to an Honest Living, Alvin E. Roth’s Moral Economics, Peniel Joseph’s The Sword and the Shield, Martyn Rady’s The Habsburgs, Marc David Baer’s The Ottomans, Dorothy Roberts’s Torn Apart, Jonathan Sacks’s Morality, and Myth America, edited by Kevin Kruse and Julian Zelizer. He worked previously at Harvard University Press and also holds a PhD in history from Yale University.
