Little, Brown’s Bestseller “Eruption” by Michael Crichton & James Patterson Picked Up as Highly Anticipated Sony Adaptation

Writers Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo to adapt the #1 New York Times bestseller under the production of Sherri Crichton, James Patterson, Shane Salerno and The Story Factory.
NEW YORK, NY — (July 7, 2025) Hachette Book Group announced the film adaptation of James Patterson and Michael Crichton’s 2024 book Eruption (Little, Brown) today. Sony will adapt the story alongside writers Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo and producers Sherri Crichton, Patterson, and Shane Salerno and The Story Factory.
Sony won the project in a competitive auction last summer, as Eruption is a novel Crichton— the legendary creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld—began before his death in 2008 and was completed by global publishing phenomenon James Patterson. The book debuted at #1 across all major bestseller lists—including The New York Times, Amazon, Apple Books, and Barnes & Noble.
Set on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Eruption follows a catastrophic volcanic explosion poised to wipe out the island until a larger threat emerges. When a long-buried doomsday secret held by the U.S. military surfaces, it forces humanity to confront a danger more terrifying than anything nature can unleash.
