Solomon Eagle

About the Author

Solomon Eagle (1884-1958) was born Sir John Collings Squire. Under his own name, Squire was a popular English poet, writer, historian, editor, and critic. The original bearer of his pen name, according to the author was “a poor maniac who…used to run naked through the street, with a pan of coals of fire on his head.” Knighted in 1933, Squire’s journalistic work gave him control of a substantial portion of the London press.  An autobiography, The Honeysuckle and the Bee, appeared in 1937; his Collected Poems appeared posthumously in 1959.
