About the Author

Mary Augusta Ward, née Arnold (1851-1920), wrote novels under her married name, Mrs. Humphry Ward. Born in Tasmania, her family moved to England in 1856. Her “religious novels with a purpose” such as Robert Elsmere extolled Victorian virtues and were bestsellers in England and the United States.
