John Addington Symonds

About the Author

John Addington Symonds (1840–1893) was an English poet, biographer, and literary critic. Although he was an early advocate of the validity of male love, the taboos of Victorian England prevented Symonds from speaking openly about homosexuality. He is best known for his work Renaissance in Italy.
