Fred Lewis Pattee

About the Author

Fred Lewis Pattee (1863-1950) was an American writer and teacher.  He advocated treating American literature as a distinct field of study rather than a subset of English literature.  He is best known for A History of American Literature since 1870 (1915) and “Is There an American Literature?” (1896). His autobiography, Penn State Yankee, appeared posthumously in 1953.
