Francis Stoddard

Francis Hovey Stoddard (1847-1936) was born in Middlebury, Vermont. A professor of English language and literature, he was also a dean at New York University. He studied English philology at Oxford University, and worked in cotton manufacturing in Massachusetts. His books include The Modern Novel (1883) and The Study of the English Language (1894).
