Stat geeks, going deep, and all-time feats.
Spend a year at the ballpark with the facts, stats, personalities, and most memorable moments from America’s pastime. Which One?—What player’s number has been retired by three teams? (Nolan Ryan, by the Angels, Astros, and Rangers.) Baseball by the Numbers—True or False: Bob Uecker, a far more famous broadcaster than player, hit three of his 14 career home runs off Hall of Fame pitchers. (True, off Sandy Koufax, Gaylord Perry, and Ferguson Jenkins.) Dubious Distinctions—Name the last pitcher to allow four home runs in an inning. (Kyle Gibson, Philadelphia Phillies). And quotes: “I had a better year than he did.”—Babe Ruth in 1930, upon learning that his contract for $80,000 was higher than President Herbert Hoover’s salary.
