Paul Young leads us back to the great questions of human existence: How does life go on in the face of irreconcilable loss? How can the irredeemable find redemption?

A Letter from the Author

Almost twenty years ago, The Shack landed on the shelves of booksellers around the world and began its unexpected odyssey. It surprised everyone, especially me. The first fifteen copies that I printed on a photocopy machine at a local retail office supply store did everything I ever wanted the book to do. It was the only Christmas present I could afford to give our six children that year. Since then, it has found its way into the hands of millions.

I was often asked if I would ever write a sequel and my answer was, “Probably not. I mean, who could write a sequel to The Shack.” I thought it would be an exercise in futility to even attempt such a thing. So, I wrote other books, non-fiction and novels that I am proud of, and which have found their own places in the world. The Shack had an energy and life of its own and I was content to simply watch with gratitude.

Nine years later, I was on a speaking trip when a friend told me about a man incarcerated on Nashville Tennessee’s Riverbend Maximum Security Institution’s death row. He told me that this man had been ‘taken apart’ by The Shack, where the main character, Mack, had a confrontation in a cave with Sophia, the Wisdom of God.

“Paul, if I buy a new copy of The Shack, would you please sign it so that I can take it into the prison and give it to him?”

“Uh…no. But, if you can get me in, we can go together and surprise him.”

That began a deep friendship, not only with him, but growing to about a dozen or more men. We have cried together, prayed together, they all signed and sent me a card the day after my father died, and so much more. They know about my family, and I have talked with theirs.

A few years ago, a story line began to emerge, softly and incrementally. What if the man who abducted and murdered Mackenzie’s daughter ended up on the death row which houses my friends? What could possibly occur that would require Mack to face him? How is justice related to forgiveness? What has happened in the years since Mack’s powerful weekend at The Shack? Does an encounter with God fix everything? How does the process of grief unfold? And so much more.
