William I, still getting used to his new title of “the Conqueror,” built a castle tower here (1077-1097) to keep the Londoners in line. Over the centuries, his successors built more walls and towers around it to create this complex, which today covers 18 acres. The heavily fortified Tower served as a royal residence, the Royal Mint, the Royal Jewel House, and, most famously, as the prison and execution site of those who dared oppose the Crown.

The Tower represents the ultimate power of the monarch. See the execution site where Henry VIII axed exes. Ogle the crown jewels, the richest on earth. See prisons that held the likes of Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth, and the Nazi Rudolf Hess. Tour halls of armor and weapons and take a meaty Beefeater tour. You’ll find more bloody history per square inch than anywhere else in Britain by touring this original tower of power.
