More than just a great museum, the Borghese Gallery is a beautiful villa set in the greenery of surrounding gardens. You get to see art commissioned by the luxury-loving Borghese family displayed in the very rooms for which it was created.

There’s a superb collection of works by Bernini, including his intricately carved Apollo and Daphne, a statue that’s more air than stone. Among the many Caravaggio paintings is the artist’s portrait of himself—as a severed head. Frescoes, marble, stucco, and interior design enhance the masterpieces.

This is a place where—regardless of whether you learn a darn thing—you can sit back and enjoy the sheer beauty of the palace and its art.

ORIENTATION

Cost: €9, or €13 during special exhibits; both prices include €2 reservation fee (see “Reservations” below).

Hours: Tue-Sun 9:00-19:00, ticket office closes one hour earlier, closed Mon.

Reservations: Reservations are mandatory and easy to get. Choose your day and an entry time at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, or 17:00. Booking online is easiest (galleriaborghese.it, €2 extra booking fee). You can also reserve by phone (tel. 06-32810, press 2 for English; office hours: Mon-Fri 9:00-18:00, Sat 9:00-13:00, closed Sat in Aug and Sun year-round). To pick up your ticket, present your claim number at the Borghese entrance 30 minutes before your appointed entry time (or risk forfeiting your reservation).

During peak season (May-Sept), reserve a minimum of several days in advance for a weekday visit, and at least a week ahead for weekends. Off-season, same-day reservations are possible in person on weekdays but not weekends. The Roma Pass is accepted here, but you still need to make a €2 reservation (by phone only; specify that you have a Roma Pass). If you don’t have a reservation, try arriving near the top of the hour to see if there are any no-shows; 9:00 is your best bet. Good luck.

Getting There: The museum is set idyllically but inconveniently in the vast Villa Borghese Gardens. A taxi drops you 100 yards from the museum (tell the cabbie “gal-leh-REE-ah bor-GAY-zay”). Bus #910 goes from Termini train station to the Via Pinciana stop, 100 yards from the museum. By Metro, use the Barberini stop, walk up Via Veneto, enter the park, and turn right, following signs (a 20-minute walk). The Spagna Metro stop is equally close, but the route to the museum is circuitous.
