Excited for the Barbie Movie? Read these.
by Mary Kay McBrayer
It’s been months since I’ve been scouring the trailers for Barbie for everything I remember about playing Barbies when I was a kid. So far, I’ve checked off rollerblades, a pink convertible, the splits, toes that won’t not point, and floating down out of the dream house as if by magic.
But that’s not enough. I am a Barbie girl. I need it all. So until that film releases on July 21, I’ll be reading these books to tide me over. If you’re as impatient as I am, then come on, Barbie, let’s go party.
If you thought loving “things” made you superficial… think again. Fascinated by the passion that people have toward objects—be it phones, clothing, dolls, books, whatever—Dr. Aaron Ahuvia examines them all. He looks at why we give meaning to objects, why some obsessions are fleeting and intense, whereas others lead us to hoarding, or even destroying the objects before we’d let someone else own them. This book is full of case studies and analysis of those living in this material world. So, all of us.

When I was a kid, Barbies were the epitome of fun. This book digs into the mechanics of all kind of fun throughout the ages, divulging hidden histories about everything from theme parks to sports. The author goes into the origins of Barbie fun, of course, but he tackles adjacent topics like “dressing up,” too—and what is playing Barbies if not playing dress up by proxy? And, BONUS, there are illustrations!

Speaking of playing dress up, let’s talk about clothes for dolls. In this book, Marsha Greenberg talks doll couture into finite detail. You get original patterns and instructions for not only the clothing of 18-inch dolls, all of which are pictured, but she also explains how to transform vintage cloth you already own. That means you get to upcycle the stuff that you already have but never use, like handkerchiefs and tea towels, into bespoke doll styles. To quote the Bride of Chucky, “Barbie, eat your heart out.”

For a more specialized version of the one listed above, check out this additional Marsha Greenberg book. All 125 of these creations were transformed from handkerchiefs. As above, this book offers instructions, patterns, and a materials guide.

What a great title, right? I mean, tell me honestly that as a child the first thing you did when you got a new Barbie wasn’t taking all her clothes off. Of course it was! If not just to see how the clothes worked, then to make them behave badly. In this novel, single mom Carla tries to hold her life together in Alaska by working at a Mexican restaurant and selling her naughty dolls to a sex website. It focuses more on the woman than the dolls, naturally, but it’s a reminding reframing of the dolls that so many of us grew up loving.

We all know that Barbie has everything, but the boss babes featured in the pages of this coloring book have given so much to our society. Marketed as a coloring book for adults, we find ourselves crayoning the faces—and outfits!—of everyone from Malala to Cleopatra. Not to mention, there’s a paper doll dress-up section, too. YAY.

This book is a series of practical and hilarious instructions on how to become a real adult for those who are pretty much there but don’t have all the details colored in. It’s based on the blog Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown, and its tips on adjusting to the adult world are both kind and necessary. Advice like how to not run out of toilet paper. How to be fine with dining out alone. When something bad happens, how to not immediately rush to figure out why it was not your fault. Or how to avoid hooking up with your coworkers by imagining them all with “plastic, featureless doll crotches.” See, Barbie is ubiquitous, y’all.
