  About The Book

Five-time Caldecott honoree Jerry Pinkney has been one of the most acclaimed and beloved children's illustrators for two generations. Here, he retells Aesop's fable of The Lion and the Mouse--with no words. His stunning pictures speak volumes.

A ferocious lion catches a field mouse for dinner, but is amused by the cowering creature and, on a whim, decides to let him go. Later, when the lion is caught in a poacher's trap, the mouse, remembering his debt, nibbles at the rope until the lion is free. This classic tale reminds readers that no act of kindness is wasted, and all creatures have something to give, no matter what their size.

This wordless tale provides a great venue for Jerry's captivating illustrations to really shine.

* "Pinkney enriches this classic tale of friendship with another universal theme - family - affectingly illustrated in several scenes as well as in the back endpapers... African species grace splendid panoramas that balance the many finely detailed, closeup images of the protagonists. Pinkney has no need for words; his art speaks eloquently for itself."
