Grand Central Publishing Acquires Memoir by Flea, Bassist and Founding Member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers
Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, is pleased to announce the acquisition today of a memoir by Flea, the bassist and founding member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, one of the most prominent and successful bands of the last 30 years. Ben Greenberg, Executive Editor at Grand Central Publishing, acquired the world rights in an exclusive negotiation with David Vigliano of David Vigliano & Associates. A publication date has not yet been set for the as-yet untitled memoir. Hachette Audio will publish an audio edition. UK and Commonwealth rights were pre-empted by Sarah Emsley at Headline at the time of acquisition.
In his self-written memoir, Flea— who recently lit up social media with his viral post about the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2014 SuperBowl performance— will share stories from his intense and dynamic life, including: his move from a “normal” upbringing in the suburbs of New York to Los Angeles to live a bohemian life with a jazz musician step-father; his young, rebellious life on the streets of LA where he befriends Anthony Kiedis and founds the Red Hot Chili Peppers with Kiedis and two other high school friends; details about his sometimes complex friendship and collaboration with Kiedis; his myriad experiences with hard drugs; and, of course, the tumultuous creative journey of the legendary Red Hot Chili Peppers through its various incarnations over the last 30 years, according to Flea.
Of the acquisition, Greenberg said, “Grand Central is thrilled to publish Flea’s memoir. Besides being a voracious reader, he is an utterly unique musician, thinker, and creative force—whether with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Atoms for Peace, or his Silverlake Conservatory which fosters music education in Los Angeles. His story is epic.”

Gretchen Young, VP, Executive Editor acquired the world rights from Creative Artists Agency. The as-yet untitled memoir and accompanying audio book have a tentative publication date of Spring 2016.

She'll divulge how she found herself living a dark double life and will share personal stories of her despair, her time in rehab, and, ultimately, her recovery process.
Vargas found salvation from her anxiety and alcoholism in the realization that many others were similarly suffering; more Americans are medicated for anxiety than any other disorder, and alcoholism is a growing problem among women. Through her memoir, Vargas hopes to provide solace and guidance to others who are battling addiction.

Little, Brown to publish e-book THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF CHRIS KYLE by Michael J. Mooney
Reagan Arthur, publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Little, Brown has acquired The Life and Legend of Chris Kyle: American Sniper, Navy SEAL, an original e-book by journalist Michael J. Mooney to be published on April 23.
America has been fascinated with and has celebrated Chris Kyle—a U.S. Navy SEAL who is known as the most lethal sniper in the history of the American military—since well before Kyle was tragically shot and killed by another veteran on February 2 of this year. This desire to know much more about Kyle, and to pay proper tribute to his life, continues. On March 21, Dallas’s D Magazine published a major story about Chris Kyle by staff writer and contributor to GQ, Outside, and Grantland Michael J. Mooney, who had been spending time with Kyle and reporting intimately on him for over nine months before Kyle was killed. The Life and Legend of Chris Kyle goes beyond that magazine piece to give a fuller sense of Kyle, his life, and his death with more great and revealing stories. Mooney sheds light on Kyle working with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, showing them going to gun ranges and ranches, bonding over guns and whiskey and the camaraderie of fellow servicemen—a rough but often effective kind of group therapy.
Mooney also shares deeply personal and previously untold stories from Kyle’s childhood, anecdotes told exclusively to Mooney by Kyle’s wife and his closest friends about him in high school, in the rodeo, and growing up with two dreams: to be a cowboy and to be in the Marines. (Kyle ended up in the SEALs simply because the Marine recruiter was out to lunch when he first came into the recruitment building.)

With the largest number of women serving in the nation’s history-- 20 women in the U.S. Senate and 78 in the House of Representatives -- Kelley will investigate their influence on the 113th Congress in her new book. She will focus on the Senate, known as “the world’s most exclusive club,” which has been traditionally white and male but is now, according to Kelley, “divinely diverse and one-fifth female.”
Kelley, who lives in Washington, D.C. and worked in the U.S. Senate for four years, says: “As a woman who cheers the accomplishments of other women on both sides of the aisle, I come to this project with a positive bias, and I am eager to learn if the combined talents and collegiality of women will make a difference in the way our laws are made and the country’s business is conducted. More importantly, through in-depth reporting I will try to answer the question that so many are asking: can the presence of women break the ugly gridlock now choking Congress?”
