Hachette Book Group and KADOKAWA Corporation announced today that they have entered into an agreement to create a new venture, joining HBG’s Yen Press imprint, a leader in the US publication of Japanese manga and light novels, with KADOKAWA, a major Japanese publisher. KADOKAWA will hold majority ownership, with 51% of the business to be acquired through its US investment company and HBG controlling 49% of the business. The transaction is expected to be completed by end of April, at which point Yen Press will function as Yen Press LLC, a joint venture between HBG and Kadokawa.
Yen Press is one of the largest English language manga imprints in North America, specializing in manga and light novels, publishing a broad range of titles including English translations of Japan originated titles, manga adaptations of novels by bestselling Hachette authors like James Patterson and Stephenie Meyer, and original manga developed at Yen Press. The joint venture will continue to leverage HBG’s strengths in manga publishing, distribution, sales, and marketing. Moreover, the partnership will enable Yen Press and KADOKAWA to maximize marketing collaboration between book publishing and anime distribution (through KADOKAWA’s expertise in the anime marketplace), while also seeking to expand ebook distribution, to maximize the growth potential of Japanese content in the North American market.

Caspar and his mom are presenting his story in an exciting new way. Unbeknownst to Caspar, his mom signed a book deal agreeing to write his life story. Luckily, Caspar found out about the book at the last minute and dashed to the printer in the nick of time to make corrections in the margins and over his mom’s text, telling his side of the story. The results are both hilarious and heart-warming. Caspar and his mom Emily are incredibly close, and Emily often features in his videos.

The Perseus Books Group and Hachette Book Group announced today that they have entered into a binding commitment to sell Perseus’s publishing business to Hachette. The transaction is expected to close after regulatory approval is received.

Open eBooks, a new initiative and ereader app that will make thousands of popular, top-selling eBooks available to children in need for free, is launching today. First Lady Michelle Obama released a video today raising awareness of the new opportunity for children. The initiative is designed to address the challenge of providing digital reading materials to children living in lowincome households, and offers unprecedented access to quality digital content, including a catalog of eBooks valued at more than $250 million.
President Obama announced a nongovernmental eBooks effort in support of the ConnectED Initiative at the April 30 Kids Town Hall held by the White House at the Anacostia Branch of the District of Columbia Public Library. ConnectED is multipronged effort designed to provide all youth with access to highquality digital learning tools. Since it launched, over 20 million more students have been connected to highspeed broadband in their schools and libraries and millions more are taking advantage of its free private sector resources. Open eBooks complements the new digital infrastructure to provide an opportunity for kids in need to have a worldclass eLibrary in their homes.

The book is tentatively scheduled to be published in hardcover, e-book and audio editions in 2017. LIFE & WORK will be a hybrid of memoir by David Lynch, a leading figure on the cultural landscape for almost four decades, and biography by Kristine McKenna, who has been a friend of Lynch and a close observer of his work since his first feature, Eraserhead (1977). In the book, Lynch will truly open up for the first time about his lifetime of extraordinary creativity, the friendships he’s made along the way, and the struggles he’s faced – sometimes successful, sometimes not – to bring his visionary projects to fruition.
McKenna’s biographical sections will be based on her new interviews with approximately 90 of Lynch’s friends, ex-wives, family members, actors, agents, musicians and collaborators in various fields, all interwoven into the story of Lynch’s life as a director of legendary films. David Lynch will read these remembrances and respond — essentially riffing on his own life.
Megan Tingley, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, announced today the acquisition of The Magic Misfits, the debut middle-grade series by acclaimed award-winning actor and bestselling author Neil Patrick Harris. The acquisition for North American rights was negotiated by Laura Nolan of Kuhn Projects and Alvina Ling, Editor in Chief of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, who will edit the series with Rex Ogle, Senior Editor.
Scheduled to launch in Spring 2017 as an illustrated hardcover and ebook, and also in audio (which Harris will narrate), The Magic Misfits is Harris’s first foray into writing for young readers and follows the enormous success of his bestselling adult memoir Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography. Well known for his creative genius on the screen, stage, and page, Harris, with this latest endeavor, combines his passion as a magic enthusiast with his more recent experiences as a parent to craft a series that will inspire and entertain kids.

Hachette Book Group (HBG) has announced that they will be handling sales and distribution for Hachette UK (HUK) titles into the United States, effective January 2016.
HBG has been providing various sales and distribution services to HUK for many years, including distribution into Canada, and North American services for Octopus Books and Quercus Books. And over the last year, HUK has been consolidating some of its remaining US distribution relationships under HBG. In January 2015, HBG began selling and distributing the bestselling Asterix line into the US, and in January, HUK will end its relationship with Trafalgar Square Publishing. Also beginning in January, HBG will sell and distribute HUK’s Chambers line of reference material, formerly distributed by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Hachette Book Group (HBG) has announced that they have entered into an agreement with Kids Can Press (KCP). Under this agreement, HBG will be selling and distributing all titles published by KCP throughout the world, effective February 1, 2016.
Kids Can Press, which is based in Toronto, Canada, and is a division of Corus Entertainment Inc., has been distributed by University of Toronto Press and sold in the U.S. through a variety of commission sales groups. Among its long list of award-winning books for children, the KCP library includes the Franklin the Turtle series by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark, which is the single most successful franchise in the history of Canadian children’s publishing, the Scaredy Squirrel and Chester series by Mélanie Watt, and the acclaimed CitizenKid™ collection.

Next week Orbit will publish the first installments of a new fantasy story by acclaimed author K.J. Parker, to be serialized digitally until the series has concluded, followed by a print and digital release, Orbit publisher Tim Holman announced today.
The first three installments of The Two of Swords will be published on April 21st, with new installments released monthly through the rest of the year. Each will be published internationally.
The writing of the full The Two of Swords cycle has not yet been completed. While Parker knows how the story will end, there are many routes the characters could take to get there. The Two of Swords’s cast is large even for an epic fantasy story, with the viewpoint perspective changing in each installment.
“What drew me to this project was the opportunity to, quite literally, make history,” said Parker about this new project; “a broad, unified sweep of significant events, witnessed by a wide spectrum of diverse characters – farm boys, soldiers, spies, tradesmen and emperors; rather than run a dozen storylines in parallel, I've used a sort of relay-race structure, passing the narrative baton from observer to observer. I've tried to make each section both a self-contained novella and a cog in the larger machine.”
Orbit announces the acquisition of two science fiction novels by Ann Leckie, author of the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Ancillary Justice and its sequel, Ancillary Sword. Ancillary Sword has also been nominated for this year’s Nebula Award and, it was announced this week, Hugo Award for Best Novel.
The first novel is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2017 and will be set in the same universe as her previous Ancillary books. The second will be an unrelated science fiction novel. Both novels will be published simultaneously in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Ancillary Justice was Leckie’s debut, and the first novel ever to win all three of the prestigious Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards, honoring the best works in science fiction. Both Ancillary Justice and Ancillary Sword were praised for the quality of their writing, their unique and innovative ideas, and their awareness of social issues. NPR Books called Ancillary Justice “assured, gripping, and stylish,” while the New York Times praised Ancillary Sword as “powerful.”

Grand Central Publishing (GCP), a division of Hachette Book Group, is excited to announce the acquisition for its Forever imprint of the Hacker Series, five novels by #1 New York Times bestselling author Meredith Wild. Leah Hultenschmidt, Editorial Director of Forever, acquired world rights in a significant seven-figure deal brokered by Kimberly Brower of the Rebecca Friedman Literary Agency. The first four books in the series, which were originally self-published by the author – Hardwired, Hardpressed, Hardline, and Hard Limit – will be released as Forever ebook editions on April 7 with Forever trade paperback editions following on May 12. The highly anticipated fifth and final book in the series, Hard Love, will be released simultaneously in both ebook and trade paperback editions on September 15.
Rights to the Hacker Series have already been sold in 12 countries, including Transworld in the UK, who will also release their edition of the first four ebooks on April 7.
The Hacker Series is a major self-publishing success story. The series has already sold 1.2 million ebooks and approximately 200,000 print-on-demand trade paperbacks.
National accounts like Barnes & Noble and Hastings initially placed modest orders, but found they had to reorder frequently to keep the books on the shelves. “The rapid sales of Wild’s Hacker books caught my attention,” said Jules Herbert, Romance Buyer at Barnes & Noble. “Wild is definitely an author to watch.”

Hachette Book Group (HBG) has entered into an agreement to purchase Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, recognized as one of America’s most innovative publishers of illustrated books and creative non-fiction. The closing will take place in the next several months, subject to meeting the closing conditions. As of that date, Black Dog & Leventhal will become an imprint of HBG’s newest division, Hachette Books, led by Publisher Mauro DiPreta.
Black Dog & Leventhal was founded in 1993 by J.P. Leventhal. Leventhal will continue as Publisher of the imprint, and the company’s management will remain in place, with Rebecca Koh elevated to the position of Editorial Director, and Maureen Winter becoming Associate Publisher.
The impressive range and variety of the Black Dog & Leventhal list is evident in their recent bestsellers, which include The Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker, Skyscrapers, Take Me Out to the Ballpark, The Complete Front Pages of the New York Times, The Louvre: All the Paintings, Theodore Gray’s The Elements, as well as the more recent Molecules, which is currently on the New York Times Science bestseller list. The company publishes 20 to 30 books per year, in the categories of art, history, science, humor, cooking, crafts, music, and theatre, as well as a selection of books for young readers.
Mauro DiPreta, publisher of Hachette Books, the new namesake imprint of Hachette Book Group, announced today the acquisition of a provocative, witty, and heartfelt book on the downsides of marriage by entertainment icon and outspoken advocate Whoopi Goldberg in a deal with the Creative Artists Agency. This as-yet untitled work will draw from her years of personal experience through marriages and other relationships, which ultimately led her to realize that marriage isn’t for everybody. The book is slated for publication in September of 2015 and will be available as an audio book by Hachette Audio and as an e-book.

Reagan Arthur, publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Little, Brown, a division of Hachette Book Group, has acquired World rights for PRESENCE by social psychologist Amy Cuddy. The book was acquired by executive editor Tracy Behar in a deal negotiated by Richard Pine at Inkwell Management. The book is slated for publication in fall 2015 and will be available as an audio book by Hachette Audio.

Twain and Stanley Enter Paradise was inspired by the real life friendship between two towering figures of the late 19th century, famed author and humorist Mark Twain and legendary explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley. Forever, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing (GCP), a division of Hachette Book Group, has acquired the world rights from Kristyn Keene of ICM to the next three novels by S.C. Stephens, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Thoughtless series. Beth de Guzman, VP, Digital and Paperback Publisher, acquired the books and Megha Parekh will edit.
Stephens was one of the trailblazers in self-publishing, charting high on retail ebook bestseller lists with her novels Thoughtless and Effortless. The third book in the series, Reckless, debuted at #1 on the New York Times eBook fiction bestseller list.
Stephens’s first book for Forever, Thoughtful, is a retelling of the events in Thoughtless from the point of view of Kellan Kyle, the book’s hero. It will be published in simultaneous print and ebook editions in February 2015 with a second book following in the Fall of 2015. The third book is scheduled for the Spring of 2016.

The gala event took place at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City. Often referred to as the “Oscars of spoken word entertainment,” the evening marks a gathering of authors, narrators and publishers where the most prestigious awards honoring audiobooks in the United States are announced.
Hachette Audio was deeply humbled in particular to accept one of the top two prizes of the night - for Distinguished Achievement in Production, which went to Pete Seeger: The Storm King - written and read by beloved icon Pete Seeger, and masterfully edited, produced, and presented by Grammy-winning percussionist and producer Jeff Haynes. Orbit announced today the acquisition of two new novels and four original novellas from multiple Hugo Award-nominated author Mira Grant. One of the novels will be a third book in the "Parasitology" series, following the Hugo Award-nominated Parasite and Symbiont, and will conclude the trilogy, while the second novel and all four novellas will be set in the world of the "Newsflesh" series.
Mira Grant is a pseudonym of Seanan McGuire, winner of the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for best new writer. Orbit published the first book under the Grant pseudonym, Feed, in 2010, and the following year it became her first Hugo Award-nominated novel. The sequels, Deadline and Blackout, were also nominated for the award. McGuire has also received a shared Hugo Award for Best Fancast for her work on the SF Squeecast.
Parasite is a finalist for the 2014 Hugo Award, the fourth Best Novel nomination for the Mira Grant name. Quercus announced today that they are moving sales and distribution services from Random House Publisher Services to Hachette Book Group (HBG), effective July 1, 2014. HBG will handle North American sales and distribution of all printed and digital Quercus products, as well as providing office space to Quercus’ five US-based employees. This move comes as a result of Hachette UK’s acquisition of Quercus, which was announced last month.

At its panel at Seattle's Sakura-Con today, Yen Press announced a dedicated program for the English-language publication of Japanese light novels, to be branded Yen On. The newly established Yen On brand will expand on the imprint's previous light novel offerings, which include such properties as Spice and Wolf, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (co-published with sister company Little, Brown Books for Young Readers), and the forthcoming releases of Sword Art Online and Accel World. Reagan Arthur, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Lee Boudreaux has been named Vice President and Editorial Director of an eponymous imprint, publishing eight to ten titles a year. She will begin her new role on September 2, 2014.
For the past nine years Boudreaux has been the editorial director of Ecco, a division of HarperCollins, working with authors who include Ben Fountain, David Wroblewski, Madeline Miller, Kevin Wilson, Eleanor Henderson, Ron Rash, Jennifer Senior, Ivy Pochoda, and Patrick DeWitt. Boudreaux spent her first nine years in publishing at Random House, where she acquired and edited the first novels of Curtis Sittenfeld, Arthur Phillips, and Adriana Trigiani. Writers Boudreaux has worked with have won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Orange Prize, the PEN/Hemingway award, the Frank O'Connor prize for short stories, the Los Angeles Times and Center for Fiction first novel awards, and been finalists for the National Book Award, the Booker prize, and the PEN/Faulkner Award.

Creamer began her career at Putnam, starting as assistant to Phyllis Grann and rising to the position of VP, Senior Editor. During her three decades in the industry, Creamer has acquired and edited numerous acclaimed bestselling and award-winning books by such authors as Lance Armstrong, J. A. Jance, Lauren Weisberger, Elizabeth Edwards, Douglas Blackmon, and Kurt Eichenwald, among many others.

A publication date has not yet been set for the as-yet untitled memoir. Hachette Audio will publish an audio edition. At GCP, Beth de Guzman, VP, Digital and Paperback Publisher, acquired the North American and translation rights, and, Genevieve Pegg, Editorial Director for Orion Fiction, acquired the UK rights.
In North America, the as‐yet untitled trilogy will be published during a six‐month span: Book 1 in August 2014, Book 2 in November 2014, and Book 3 in February 2015. Leah Hultenschmidt, Forever’s Editorial Director, will edit, and the books will be published simultaneously in trade paperback and e‐book editions, a first for Malpas, who began her writing career as a self‐published e‐book author. Hachette Audio will release audio editions of the new series.

By virtue of this groundbreaking agreement, fans of Square Enix’s manga in over 200 countries will have access to the authorized, English-language ebook editions of 175 titles through Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Google and Kobo with new volumes available concurrently with future print releases. Launching first with internationally best selling series like Atsushi Ohkubo’s Soul Eater, Yana Toboso's Black Butler, and Yoshiki Tonogai's Doubt, Yen Press will roll out additional series weekly throughout the month of April with a blockbuster assortment that includes Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist, Jun Mochizuki's PandoraHearts, Ryukishi07's Higurashi WHEN THEY CRY, and Until Death Do Us Part by Hiroshi Takashige and DOUBLE-S. She'll divulge how she found herself living a dark double life and will share personal stories of her despair, her time in rehab, and, ultimately, her recovery process.
Vargas found salvation from her anxiety and alcoholism in the realization that many others were similarly suffering; more Americans are medicated for anxiety than any other disorder, and alcoholism is a growing problem among women. Through her memoir, Vargas hopes to provide solace and guidance to others who are battling addiction.
Michael Pietsch, CEO of Hachette Book Group, announced today that Mauro DiPreta will join HBG as Vice President and Publisher of Hachette Books, a new publishing division that HBG will launch this year. Built on the foundation of the Hyperion backlist that HBG acquired in 2013, Hachette Books will be a new home for publishing across a broad spectrum of subjects and interests. As Publisher, DiPreta will be responsible for the division’s direction and publishing, overseeing a staff of editors, marketers, and designers, and will join HBG’s Executive Management Board. The existing Hyperion staff will report to him and become part of Hachette Books, and he will hire additional staff as necessary. The Hachette Books lineup will include narrative nonfiction, business, pop culture, science, health and wellness, humor, and some fiction.
DiPreta has spent more than two decades in the publishing industry and was most recently Vice President and Editor in Chief of Crown Archetype, an imprint of Penguin Random House. At Crown, DiPreta managed a team of editors and helped oversee the publishing program of nearly one hundred titles per year across five imprints–Archetype, Harmony, Business, Forum, and Three Rivers Press. He acquired and edited numerous New York Times bestsellers, including Sum It Up by Pat Summitt (a #1 bestseller), Let Me Off at the Top! by Ron Burgundy, and League of Denial by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru. Prior to Crown, DiPreta spent sixteen years at HarperCollins and William Morrow, where he acquired and edited the hugely successful Marley & Me by John Grogan and many other bestselling books. “We shipped over 120 million books last year,” said Gerry Cummings, senior vice president of distribution at Hachette Book Group. The center serves as HBG’s sole distributor, shipping the company’s many trade publications and titles from bestselling authors like James Patterson, Michael Connelly and Sparks.
To keep up with demand for all of HBG’s titles from its 20 publishers, such as Business Plus and Forever Yours, and to distribute page turners for a growing number of outside publishers — 16 and counting — HBG announced in December that it plans to invest $6.1 million to expand its distribution facility by 218,000 square feet, along with adding 10 jobs.

Hachette Book Group (HBG) has announced that it will expand its distribution center in Lebanon, Indiana. The facility is HBG’s primary warehouse and distribution center for North America. When completed, the expanded facility will be approximately 1.5 million square feet, in two buildings. Construction is scheduled to begin in March and will increase the facility by an additional 218,000 square feet. It is also expected to add 10 new full time jobs.

Ebooks will go on sale immediately in the UK, Europe, Australia, India and Africa (through HUK’s ebook retail partners) and in South America, the Caribbean, and Asia in the coming weeks (through HBG’s ebook retail partners).
Advantages of this new arrangement include selling ebooks in local currency and with local market knowledge. In addition, HBG's ebooks will be available for promotion and inclusion in retailers' marketing programs in HUK's territories. Authors will receive full ebook royalties on these sales.

The audiobook edition, read by Chris Hadfield himself, will release simultaneously from Hachette Audio.
Disney and Hachette Book Group (HBG) announced today Hachette’s agreement to purchase Disney’s adult trade publishing imprint, Hyperion. When the acquisition is completed, HBG will become the publisher of more than 1,000 books published by the Hyperion adult trade book division since its inception in 1991, as well as approximately 25 books scheduled for future publication.

Hachette Book Group (HBG) announced today that they will provide unabridged audiobook recordings free of charge to the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress (LOC). By the end of 2013, HBG will begin making select backlist and new titles available, including new releases, through the NLS’s popular Talking Books program.
With this collaboration, HBG will help the NLS best serve their user base of close to 500,000 patrons of all ages, who are unable to read or handle regular print books. HBG’s providing high quality audiobook productions at no cost enables the NLS and LOC to save time and money they otherwise would have to spend to create their own versions of HBG’s audiobooks (they are legally entitled to do so through the Chafee Amendment, which allows groups producing specialized formats for the blind to record audios without getting permission from the copyright holder). In this way, HBG is able to contribute to a significant disability organization, and to reach readers hungry for good books.

Michael Pietsch, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Little, Brown has acquired North American publication rights to Nolan Ryan’s The Nolan Ryan Beef Cookbook. The book is scheduled for publication in May 2014.
Nolan Ryan is known for his prowess on the baseball diamond. The only player in the Major Leagues to have his number retired by three different teams, he also holds the single-season and career major-league strikeout records, and the Guinness World Record for throwing the fastest baseball ever, clocked at 100.9 miles per hour. Ryan has pitched seven no-hitters, a major-league record, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is currently a member of the owner’s group as well as , president and CEO of the Texas Rangers.

Lagardère released its results for third quarter 2012 today. Highlights of the company’s performance are as follows:
At Lagardère: The Lagardère group’s activity “held up well, notably thanks to a return to sales growth at Lagardère Publishing and continued development in Travel Retail at Lagardère Services,” according to the company’s press release. The Group delivered net sales for the third quarter of €1.963B (-0.4% on a like-for-like basis and -1% on a reported basis).
At Hachette Livre: Hachette Livre (Lagardère Publishing) delivered net sales of €626M, up 4.2% in reported terms and up .1% like-for-like. Of note during the third quarter was the stellar performance by General Literature, which rose sharply in France (+12.4%), the UK (+17%), and the US (+7.3%), thanks to the release of JK Rowling’s THE CASUAL VACANCY on September 27. This solid performance by General Literature helped offset the slowdown in the company’s education business in France, Spain, and the UK. Digital continues to grow within the publishing division, accounting for 20% of total third-quarter Adult trade book sales in both the US and the UK, representing 6.4% of total net sales for Hachette Livre.
At Hachette Book Group: While net revenues were up 6% in the third quarter, on a year to date basis HBG’s sales are still below the prior year. Digital sales at HBG increased 3% compared with the third quarter of 2011. Digital represents 20% of HBG's net sales, consistent with last year.
HBG had 184 titles – including 27 #1s – on the New York Times bestseller list thus far in 2012. We have surpassed our year-end total of 182 bestselling titles in 2011. In addition, 59 titles hit the New York Times ebook bestseller list. Arnaud Nourry, Chairman of Hachette Livre, announced today that after seven years at the helm of Hachette Book Group, David Young has decided to return to the UK to be with his family. Effective April 1, 2013, Michael Pietsch, now Executive Vice President of HBG and Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, will succeed David Young as Chief Executive Officer of HBG, assuming full responsibility for the company’s profitability and direction. He will report to David Young and will begin immediately the search for a new Publisher for the division that he has led for the past 11 years.
Effective immediately, Ken Michaels, HBG’s Chief Operating Officer, is promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer. Ken Michaels joined HBG in 2009 and has overseen major contributions to HBG and Hachette Livre with the Order to Cash and Digital Asset Distribution platform, among many other systems enhancements. He is also responsible for HBG’s important third-party distribution services that will see the return of Disney and Hyperion in the second quarter of 2013.
In the UK, David Young on June 1, 2013 will assume the role of Deputy Chief Executive of Hachette UK and Chief Executive Officer of The Orion Publishing Group, a division of Hachette UK. In that capacity he will report to HUK’s CEO, Tim Hely Hutchinson. Tim Hely Hutchinson has today announced that Peter Roche will retire, in June 2013, from his role as Deputy CEO of Hachette UK and CEO of The Orion Publishing Group, the company he co-founded in 1992 and which he has led for the past 10 years.
David Young will also chair Hachette Livre’s Chief Operating Officers’ council, covering France, UK, USA and Spain, to help all parts of Hachette Livre benefit from his understanding of the publishing processes, systems, and efficiency. In this role and in his capacity as Chairman of HBG, he will report to Arnaud Nourry.
