After being found abandoned in the Spencer County library return box by Vicki the librarian, Dewey spent 19 years charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth and humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most. He is the most famous library cat in the world, having appeared in dozens of national magazines, and hundreds of newspapers, and he even served as the spokescat for a year-long national library campaign.

Vicki Myron the former director of the Spencer (Iowa) Public Library, spent 19 years with the real Dewey Readmore Books, whom she rescued from the library’s book-return drop on a freezing winter morning. Now retired, Vicki lives and writes in Spencer, where she continues to be known as “Dewey’s mommy.”
