Dear Reader by Marliss Melton
Dear Reader,
Remember the old 70’s television series Land of the Lost? In the show, a family was transported back in time and trapped in the age of the dinosaurs. Show No Fear, my latest book that’s coming out in September reminds me of that series because it, too, narrates a trip to a "Land of the Lost" of sorts. But this time it’s the Colombian jungle.
Show No Fear is the story of CIA operative Lucy Donovan’s journey into rebel territory in Colombia where she’s forced to confront her greatest fear: falling in love again with the Navy SEAL who broke her heart years ago.
The real-life experiences of three American contractors inspired me to write Lucy’s story. Keith Stansell, Thomas Howes, and Marc Gonsalves were manning a counter-narcotics spy plane when it crashed into the Colombian jungle in February 2003. The three men spent the next five years and five months as hostages of Colombian rebels, living in Stone Age conditions.
That’s 1,967 days, folks. Talk about being transported to a "Land of the Lost." Being computer and gadget-lovers, the three men would pass the interminable hours envisioning the kinds of technological advances being made in their absence. Following a brilliant rescue operation on July 2, 2008, Tom, Keith, and Marc came home to find that you can now talk on a cell phone without using your hands. You can post videos for the world to see on YouTube. You can connect with long lost friends on Facebook. And, best of all, laptop computers cost one fifth the price and held ten times the memory!
Never fear, readers. You don’t need to watch Land of the Lost or be held captive in a foreign land to experience edge-of-your-seat suspense. Show No Fear will transport you to the lush and terrifying jungles of Colombia and bring you safely home again in a matter of hours. So pick up a copy of this heart-pounding read coming your way this September!
