As a child one of my favorite books was The Wizard of Oz. As it so happens, in researching If Not Now, When? I realized that a woman's quest to discover her authentic self is much like Dorothy's journey to the Emerald Kingdom. The story is a wonderful representation of a rite of passage, an account of a girl's struggle to find her way home. Like Dorothy there are risks and challenges we must undertake if we are to emerge from this midlife passage a more mature woman.
As an adult some of my favorite books are, Close Range by Annie Proulx, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, Ahab's Wife by Sena Jetter Naslund, When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön, The Interpreter of Maladies, Jhumpa Lahiri, House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros, Letters To A Young Poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, Journal of A Solitude, May Sarton, The Wisdom of Insecurity, Alan Watts, The Essential Rumi, edited by Coleman Barks, Times Alone, Antonio Machado, Lorca & Jiminez, Selected Poems, edited by Robert Bly.
