I never imagined writing a book on fibromyalgia. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a doctor, not necessarily a writer. However, as I began having more and more success in helping people recover, I knew that I had to find a way to take this knowledge outside the walls of my clinical practice. The belief that fibromyalgia is incurable is so deeply ingrained in the psyche of mainstream medicine that almost everyone has failed to realize that science has already provided the answers most people are still looking for. At the request of my patients and the local medical community, I began leading workshops and seminars designed to educate people about the true causes of fibromyalgia and how to recover. As I traveled from city to city, simple word of mouth advertising and public service announcements drew hundreds of people to my seminars. My explanation of fibromyalgia and documented success stories of patients that had recovered came as a complete shock to people who had previously been told that nothing could be done for their suffering.
My goal at those seminars was always to provide all of the information that people needed to recover. The true, secret ingredient to recovering from fibromyalgia is knowledge. Once someone understands how fibromyalgia works, they move from a state of hopelessness and desperation to a place of hope and empowerment. Although my seminars have helped change many lives, it's still a lot of information to digest in one sitting. People always left full of hope and gratitude, but wanting more information. This book evolved from those experiences in combination with my hands-on treatment of patients in my office.
Most books on fibromyalgia are about how to live with this supposedly incurable condition. They are essentially survival guides that recommend a dizzying array of options that may or may not help you feel better. When I wrote The Fibromyalgia Solution, my goal went far beyond helping people survive — what kind of life is that anyway? My goal was to make the latest information about fibromyalgia and my own experience in helping people move beyond this illness accessible to as many people as possible. Fibromyalgia is a tremendously hard journey and not one I would wish on anyone. However, as is true with most of life's challenges, there is a silver lining to the pain and suffering that comes with it. With recovery comes a deep and lasting appreciation for all of the joy and beauty that each new day has to offer. My greatest hope is that this book will help countless people discover that silver lining as they reclaim their lives.
